A Guide to Throwing a Backyard Party

There is more to summer than just experiencing good times on the sand, sea, and surf. For instance, if you happen to have a great looking backyard, this can be the perfect time to have an outdoor gathering. It will give you and your guests the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors as well as the company of others.

Before planning the actual details, decide whether you want to have a strictly outdoor affair or if you are going to allow people inside the house. If you decide on the latter, you can still establish privacy by marking some rooms as private.

Next, you need to set up some basic rules. This should include whether smoking is allowed, if guests can bring along their kids, bathroom policies, and garbage disposal areas. Write these down on the invitation itself. Keep it light by playing it down with a fun tone or a rhyme.

After you have determined the guest list and sent out invitations, prepare the menu. Summer parties usually consist of a barbecue followed by cake or ice cream. Or you can ask each attendee to bring a special dish, dessert, or drink. Plan out the entertainment by putting out some games, from croquet mallets to a plastic bowling set.

On the morning of the party, make sure that your venue is in tip-top shape. Rake away clumps of dried leaves, mow the grass, and water your flower beds. Bring out your best outdoor furniture and arrange them in a manner that will make it easy for guests to mingle with one another. String up some rope lights and other decorations. Finally, set up a marquee and buy mosquito repellent to counter a sudden downpour and mosquitoes.
